Stockholm, 1 March 2019. CabinAir, which develops and manufactures integrated, active, air purification solutions for cars, trucks and other road vehicles, today began mass production at its facility in Shenzhen, China. The first systems will be supplied to a premium automobile manufacturer for launch on the Chinese market later this year.
Founded in 2016 as a subsidiary of Sweden-based Blueair, a world-leading maker of air purification solutions for home and professional use, CabinAir was built from the ground up to become a T1 supplier to the automotive industry.
R&D as well as manufacturing facilities currently meet all certifications and standard requirements of OEMs, and the company already holds ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 9001:2015 certifications. It became an independent company in January.
In-car air quality much worse
CabinAir’s integrated, active, Air Quality Solutions are designed to purify air inside vehicles, where air quality can be much worse than outdoor air quality. “People are spending longer hours traveling to and from work and school, exposing themselves to nitrogen oxides, black carbon and ultrafine particulate matter, which in turn impacts health,” says CabinAir CEO Daniel Hagström.
Poor in-car air quality is due primarily to the direct flow of exhaust from the vehicles ahead, tire and road wear products, VOCs from cleaning products and off-gassing of carpets and upholstery, and the relatively small volume of enclosed space inside the passenger compartment.
The company’s two-stage solution is based on the same Blueair technology proven in millions of homes and public spaces. It combines the effect of an optimized mechanical filter with active particle charging technology, removing more than 95% of PM2.5 and harmful ultrafine particles on single pass. With CabinAir’s active Air Quality Solutions, the in-car air is kept within WHO recommended levels throughout the drive, which can help prevent long-term health issues.
Unlike most traditional systems, which need to recirculate the air in the car in order to reach acceptably low levels of particulates, CabinAir’s system does not. This decreases the risk of elevated CO2 levels, which can cause drowsiness.
