Healthy Earth Day from Stockholm!
Earth Day is an annual global event, to raise awareness about pollution. Widespread lockdowns around the world due to the COVID-19 crisis have led to reduced vehicle traffic and air pollution, however two separate studies have found that air pollution we have already been exposed to may contribute to Covid-19 deaths.
One study is focusing on the U.S (Harvard University) and one on Europe (Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg in Germany).
According to the U.S study, an increase of 1 g/m3 in long-term PM2.5 exposure is associated with a 15% increase in the COVID-19 mortality rate, since when the body experiences chronic respiratory stress, its ability to defend itself from infections is limited.
These studies underscore the importance of continuing to fight air pollution to protect human health, both during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
We want everyone to breathe healthy air, also in their cars where air pollution can be much worse than outdoor.
